Reborn Books Class

Reborn Books will show you how to take apart an existing book, and turn it into a true art object. This class will take you through the process, step-by-step, using over two dozen short videos. You’ll watch me put together my own books, learning all my little tips and tricks. On the classroom message board, we’ll discuss how to choose books, papers and binding materials, and how to prepare them to create a book that will be a treasure for many years to come.

This is a self-paced class. Before registering, please read How Classes Work.

You’ll need these basic materials during the class:
- Duct tape
- An Xacto or craft knife
- A glue stick
- A standard hole punch
- Some long screws
- A ruler
- Clamps, like chip clips, or if you have them, woodworking clamps
The first section of the class discusses choosing books, papers and binding materials. If you have some of any of those things that you think you’d like to use, rake them together—but don’t go out and buy anything until you’ve seen those first videos.
These are some of the books I made while I was shooting the videos for this class:

I have done several altered books on my own, but I am sure that I will learn lots more interesting things from you. Just the covers alone are so exciting. So I am signing up as soon as my paycheck gets into my checking account.
Just a quick note for anyone that wonders “what do I do with them?”
I had one book that took me over 2 years to finish…(are they really ever finished)? Actually I still had 4 spots of blank areas that could have been worked on. But…over the 4th of July I brought it to a artisan fair just as a sample, I sold it to a gentleman who offered me $150 for it. Even though I loved it, I really hated to give up all that money.
It was a book of China and he and his wife had just come back from a 30th anniversary trip to China, she saw the book and HAD TO HAVE IT. I might have gotten more…darn it.
That’s a great story, Dayle! It’s wonderful that a book you put so much work into went to a home where it will be treasured.
“What do I do with them?”: I’ve used these books as journals, altered books, recipe books, and photo albums. Once you learn the basic technique, you can create books of any size, shape or thickness. These books can be filled with any papers you choose, making them infinitely flexible. I occasionally do 30 day gluebook challenges, and with this technique, I can quickly create books in the size I want to work with exactly 30 pages. I’ve also sold countless numbers of them over the years, in all sorts of themes.
Can you tell I love these books?
My mojo has been low lately, but for a class from you I will put on my big girl panties and do it. I’ve followed you on Monthly Muse for years and have binders full of your sheets. I’m so glad you have decided to do an on-line class. I hope you do many more. Thanks for keeping the links until Christmas!
Let’s see if we can whip that mojo back into shape, Alice!
