Thelzeda’s Photo Album

Several years ago, when I was working for another company, a woman named Thelzeda came into our trade show booth, and expressed interest in some of the products I’d designed. At one point in our conversation, she leaned close to me and asked, “Lisa, do you have any imagery that looks more like me?” I stopped, wondering what she meant—and then realized that the owner of the company had eliminated all the non-white faces from my work. “No”, I said quietly to Thelzeda, “not at this company—but some day, I promise you, I will.”

Thelzeda’s Photo Album contains vintage photos of African-Americans from the 1860’s through the 1930’s.

Contains 77 images.

$9.99

Each CD contains images scanned at 300dpi, and sized to print smaller than a sheet of letter-sized paper. Most are between four and five inches high, making them ideal for altered books, cards, and medium-sized collages. They can also be resized for use in web design work. The scans have been minimally retouched, so they retain their scratches and imperfections.

Sample images:

Included on each CD is a .pdf document that can be opened in Adobe Reader. The document shows a thumbnail of each image with its file name, along with usage information. The CDs come packaged in a white CD envelope (jewel cases are NOT included). Please see our angel policy for information on usage before you incorporate images into artwork for publication or sale.

  1. Oh Lisa, I am so excited about the Thezelda’s Photo album which I ordered from you! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for being inclusive; it means so much to me to have images of African Americans that I can use in my art. I’ve told a penpal who is African American about the CD and have encouraged her to order, thanks again.

  2. Thank you so much for Thelzedas Image Collection. I scrapbook, make cards and now for the last two years I make ATC’s. Up until now I have used my family photos in my work (or use a little brown pencil here and there). I thank you for finally offering a selection with people of color. Please advertise more in the Black zines, and at scrapbook shows. I’m a new and HAPPY fan.

  5. I just wanted to let you know that I used two images from the Thelzeda collection for my submission to the Tim Holtz design team. And they thought that the images were the bomb. I just wanted to say thanks for giving me images that look like me and made the difference in my DT submissions.
