The Big Five Oh ATC Swap & Giveaway

October 2nd is my 50th birthday—yep, it’s the big five oh. To celebrate, I’m doing two things: taking a road trip to a place I’ve never been, and hosting another ridiculous ATC swap/subscription giveaway/’zine project, just like I did for the fifth anniversary. Here’s the deal:
- Sign up for the swap in the comments section of this post. You MUST sign up in order to participate.
- Purchase the Big Five Oh digital collage sheet using the button below. This sheet is being sold as donationware. The minimum donation is 84¢—that’s 50¢ for me, to help subsidize the cost of doing a swap this large, and 34¢ to PayPal, to cover the transaction fee. If you want to donate more, you can edit the price of this item in your shopping cart. Donations will go towards the cost of postage and return envelopes for the swap, as well as production costs for the ‘zine.
- Print out your swanky new collage sheet, cut it up, and make five (5) artist trading cards. Each card should contain at least one of the images on the Big Five Oh collage sheet. Your cards can be all the same design, or different—whatever you feel like making. You’ll notice that all the images on the Big Five Oh sheet are sort of travel themed. Think travel, journey, wandering when you’re designing your cards, because for my big five-oh, I’m going on a trip, and also because I’ve taken quite the long, wandering journey to get here.
- Print and fill in the swap form included in the collage sheet download. This will give me your mailing address (and give you mine), as well as permission to scan and post your work, and include it in a ‘zine that may be created later. Remember to do this! Cards that arrive without a form in the same envelope will be immediately returned to the sender, unswapped.
- Put your finished cards into individual trading card sleeves. Mail your cards and the filled form to me at the address on the form, so they arrive by Friday, September 24th. No return postage is required for this swap, no matter where you are in the world.
- If I receive enough cards, I’ll put together a Big Five Oh ‘zine. If scans of your cards are used in creation of a ‘zine, you will receive a link to download a free copy when it is published. While every effort is made to fit as many cards into the ‘zine as possible, I can’t guarantee they’ll all make it in. Last time, I received 250 cards, and fit just over 100 into the ‘zine.
- From amongst the folks who submit cards for this swap, I’ll choose five to receive free six month subscriptions to The Monthly Muse (or six month renewals if they’re already subscribers).
Drawings for free subscriptions will be held on September 24th. Cards will be swapped out and returned by Tuesday, September 28th.

You sort of hit the nail on the head, K. There have been far fewer people downloading this sheet—and the ratio of people downloading to those signing up for the swap is much healthier. I get sort of cheesed off when I see 150 people downloading a sheet for a swap, and only 50 participating in that swap. Apparently, 84 cents is all it takes to fix that
The donationware model was stolen from my musician friends, who offer downloads this same way.
